PerioER Mission

Inspired by breakthroughs in nanoparticle technology and FDA-cleared periodontal device, we have developed a product designed to help people live longer with healthy gums and save their smiles. Our goal is to prevent, control, and better manage the bacteria that cause periodontitis - stopping them from entering the bloodstream through the gum tissue and affecting other parts of the body.

The Founder Story

As a pre-med student at Florida Atlantic University, Dr. Arocha, then known as “Max,” was sitting at the dinner table with his parents.  As his mother, Maritza, served dinner, his father, Mike, delivered devastating news.  He could either lose all of his teeth or try a $5,000 surgery that wasn’t a guarantee.  Mike, only 50 years old at the time, had periodontal disease.

Max found it unfathomable that there wasn’t an antibiotic to treat his father’s periodontal infection.  Max changed his major from biology to a dual major in biochemistry and microbiology, inspired by the idea of helping his father and others like him.

At Temple University’s School of Dentistry, Max studied under Dr. Rams, a professor, and Director of the Oral Microbiology Testing Service Laboratory at Temple University’s School of Dentistry.  Dr. Rams is considered the “guru” of non-surgical periodontal therapy for the treatment of periodontal disease.

As a dentist, Dr. Arocha has been able to save his father’s teeth.  Others haven’t been as fortunate, often having as many as 20 infected teeth extracted.

Looking in the mirror now, over a decade later, Dr. Arocha sees himself with graying hair.  Past his hair, he still sees the hope, determination and passion that drove him to find a non-surgical periodontal therapy.

PerioER is about more than just creating local antibiotic systems to treat periodontal disease.  PerioER was born, in essence, to provide patients with hope about saving their teeth, taking away the psychological trauma that comes with the news that one’s teeth cannot be saved.

In Plantation, Florida, Dr. Arocha has been able to help hundreds of patients a year with periodontal disease.  His vision doesn’t stop within the borders of Florida.  Dr. Arocha wants to reach out to help the millions of patients worldwide, like his father, who suffer from periodontal disease.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION
  • THE PerioER™ PERIODONTAL MEDICAL DEVICE HAS FDA CLEARANCE AS A STAND-ALONE DEVICE. HOWEVER, THE PerioER™ COMBINATION PRODUCT HAS NOT YET RECEIVED FDA APPROVAL AND IS NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FOR SALE IN THE UNITED STATES

  • Do not take micocycline if you are allergic to minocycline or tetracyclines. Ask your dentist or pharmacist for a list of these drugs if you are not sure. Swelling of the face, itching of the skin, fever and enlarged lymph nodes have been reported with the use of Minocycline on periodontal pockets. Some of these reactions were serious. Tell your dentist right away if you have any signs of allergic reaction, such as skin reactions or trouble breathing, or if you have an exaggerated sunburn reaction.

  • THE USE OF TETRACYCLINE CLASS DRUGS, INCLUDING ORAL AND TOPICAL MINOCYCLINE, DURING TOOTH DEVELOPMENT MAY CAUSE PERMANENT DISCOLORATION OF THE TEETH, AND THEREFORE SHOULD NOT BE USED IN CHILDREN OR IN PREGNANT OR NURSING WOMEN.

  • Administration of sutained release MINOCYCLINE into periodontal pockets has not been studied in patients with weakened immune systems (such as patients with HIV infections or diabetes, or those receiving chemotherapy or radiation). Tetracyclines, including oral minocycline, have been associated with the development of autoimmune syndrome with symptoms such as joint pain, muscle pain, rash, swelling, fever, enlarged lymph nodes, and general body weakness. Tell your doctor about any health problems you have, including whether you have had oral candidiasis (“thrush”) in the past, and about all medications you are taking.

  • In clinical studies, using minocycline microspheres, the most frequently reported non-dental side effects were headache, infection, flu symptoms, and pain.
